What is a nakshatra?

The zodiac of Vedic astrology is divided into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), each spanning 13°20′ of the sky and carrying its own symbol, deity, and temperament — from pioneering Ashwini to completing Revati. Because the Moon governs the mind in Jyotish, the nakshatra it occupied at your birth (the janma nakshatra) is read as the core texture of your instincts and emotional life.

Each nakshatra divides further into four padas (quarters) that fine-tune its expression. Your janma nakshatra also anchors practical tradition: it sets the starting mahadasha of your Vimshottari cycle, guides name syllables for newborns, and is one half of the classical Ashtakoota match in Kundali matching.
